Overview:
Moon Cake Festival is a festival celebrated on the 15th day of the eight-month in the Chinese calendar, which is around September or October in the Gregorian calendar. It is said that during this season, the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. Philippine Ragnarok Online is proud to release its version of the Mooncake Festival Event across its servers starting October 16, 2009. The event will let you feel the beauty and glory of the fully round moon while enjoying the delicacies made from rice cakes.
The Festival:
The Moon Cake Festival has been evident on our server Valkyrie. I have noticed that all maps except towns were populated with Hot Rice Cake monster. They freely jump from one space to another as they try to move. At a distant they look like a lump of mud with small eyes but in reality it is composed of rice I think. Why would they call it Hot Rice Cake for nothing? At our markets, a lot of vendors were already selling moon cake festival stuffs like the Hot Rice Cake Egg and Spring Rabbit Hat. At random places and tambayans, a lot of players have its own share of celebrating the festival by having the Hot Rice Cake pet with fancy names like Siopao or Pandesal. I haven’t named my pet yet because I’m having a hard time thinking a creative one.
In order to participate on the festival, find the Moon Festival Staff located in six cities across Midgard. The participating cities are Prontera, Payon, Geffen, Juno, Rachel and Lighthalzen. The Moon Festival Staff is easy to identify because the NPC has an image of an orange cat. Most of which are located near the cities kafra. Talk to him and he will bring you to the moon-welcoming hill.
Side Note: The moon-welcoming hill has a fixed window view.
From the moon viewing area, you can now start on the quests related to this event.
Getting a Pet:
The Hot Rice Cake monsters on the fields are not just stray monster that you will eventually kill to get some precious experience and loots. They could actually be tamed. Moon Cake Festival is the only event where you have the chance to tame this monster so grab the chance of owning this pet.
At the moon-welcoming hill, locate the Moon Festival Boss at the left side of the map. Talk to him and he will give you instructions on how to have your own Hot Rice Cake pet. He will then send you off to the fields to collect 40 pieces of Small Rice Cake Dough from the Hot Rice Cake monster.
The Small Rice Cake Dough is the only loot that the Hot Rice Cake monster drops. The drop rate of the loot is not that hard since a single Hot Rice Cake monster could give at an average of 3 Small Rice Cake Dough. Finding the Hot Rice Cake monster is tougher as compared than looting for Small Rice Cake. If you plan to seriously hunt for the monster, choose a smaller map so that you could easily hunt them.
Upon collecting all 40 Small Rice Cake Dough, go back to the Moon Festival Boss and exchange the item for 5 pieces of Mysterious Rice Powder. The Mysterious Rice Power is the taming item for the Hot Rice Cake monster. If you want more taming item, talk again to the Moon Festival Boss and purchase one Mysterious Rice Powder for 3,000 zeny each.
Go back to the fields and hunt for a Hot Rice Cake to be tamed. Just like the other monsters to be tamed, same process applies here. Try to keep the health of the monster as low as possible to increase your chance of taming that monster. Use the taming item when you are confident enough on your chances. A slot machine will appear on your screen and take your chances by clicking on it. Congratulations, you have successfully tamed a Hot Rice Cake monster and received a Hot Rice Cake Egg.
To start showing off your new pet, visit the nearest Pet Groomer to purchase a pet incubator. If you have an available pet incubator at your Kafra and its fine go get it any pet incubator will work anyways. Hatch your own Hot Rice Cake and see it jump as it tries to follow you around. The Hot Rice Cake is a little vegetarian on its diet. He feeds on Green Herbs only. Feed him regularly and you’ll see him loyal in no time.
Just like the other pets available, the Hot Rice Cake has also its spectacular performance. He could show some love by forming a heart shape followed by hearts coming out of its body. The other performance is quite boring because it only jumps for a while and that’s all.
Getting a Souvenir:
The Moon Festival Boss does not only give some taming items but also gives away a souvenir for the festival. The Spring Rabbit Hat souvenir is only given to adventurers who have successfully tamed a Hot Rice Cake monster. Talk to the Moon Festival Boss and he will tell you that Mr and Ms moon rabbit want to have a hot rice cake that is hardened solidly. If you agreed with the deal, hand over a Hot Rice Cake egg to the Moon Festival Boss. He will then tell you that the moon rabbit lives on the moon but it just made like a spring rabbit. After hearing his words, he will then you a Spring Rabbit Hat.
Honestly, the gear is not that useful as I see it. The additional 5 points to ATK and MATK is not that noticeable while the additional +1 ATK and MATK for every over upgrade is not that good either. It’s another headgear that is nice to have but not required to have one. It’s not even appealing to my taste of headgears to be showed off. For me, it’s just a souvenir that will remind us of the moon cake festival that we have for this year.
Getting Foods:
Of course this festival is not complete without foods. The foods are not for sale but we could make them out of the Small Rice Dough that we have loot from the Hot Rice Cake monster. Talk to Miss Interpreting Kitty located at the right portion of the moon-welcoming hill. She is an orange cat NPC who will be creating delicious foods for the festival provided that you will be supplying the ingredients. The recipes for the foods are listed below.
Korean Rice Cake
We need 3 pieces of Small Rice Dough, a White Herb and a Green Herb. This food when eaten will restore 10% of your maximum health. This food will be appealing to high health characters because it restores health by a percent.
Rainbow Cake
We need a Small Rice Dough and a Red Herb. The food boosts 10 points to MATK. I personally made a lot of these because the ingredients are easy to gather. This food will be appealing to INT type adventurers.
Honey Pastry
We need 5 pieces Small Rice Dough, a bag of grain and a sweet sauce. This food gives 20 points to flee. This food will be appealing to AGI type adventurers.
Seasame Pastry
We need 3 pieces Small Rice Dough, a honey, a white herb, a yellow herb, a green herb and a red herb. This food when eaten gives an additional 30 HIT. This food will be appealing to characters that needs more HIT. The ingredients are complex so I expect only a few adventurers will be cooking this food.
Side note: The stat boosts that the food provides are all temporary buffs.
