Midgard Crowd Control Quest – Sphinx

Note: The quest has been implemented from June 23, 2010 to July 7, 2010

Overview:
The episodic crowd control has returned! We have been challenged with the Zombie Prisoners on the forsaken city of Glast Heim. We have also experience the mighty Ice Titans on the chilling cave of Ice Dungeon. Now we are going to explore the maze of Sphinx and exterminate the formidable Anubis. Each adventurer will be rewarded with Mercenary Badges for every set of Anubis killed. For the complete details regarding the event kindly visit the Ragnaboards site.

Previous Events:
Midgard Crowd Control Event is beginning to be a popular event on pRO. The Sphinx version is the third time that crowd control has been implemented on the servers of pRO. The initial implementation of the event took place in Glast Heim where in adventurers will be killing Zombie Prisoners. The second time took place in Ice Dungeon where in the adventurers will be killing the Ice Titans. For the complete story of the event please visit the journal links below.

Quest Proper:
To start the quest, locate [Quest] Elite Mercenary at any selected city around Midgard. The Orc Village has also been chosen to have an Elite Mercenary assigned for the quest. I have no idea why they have assigned an Elite Mercenary on a far off village but for curiosity sake I went there. For valkyrie players beware because the map is PK enabled and there are a lot of PK enthusiast on the map. When you talk to the [Quest] Elite Mercenary he will convince you to join the fight against monsters in Sphinx. Once you have agreed, he will then warp you directly to the fourth level of Sphinx.

At the fourth level, [Quest] Mercenary Scout is waiting for recruited adventurers. She will be giving out details regarding the mission of decreasing the population of Anubis. The [Quest] Mercenary Scout will be awarding the adventurer with a Mercenary Badge and an Yggdrasil Berry for every 50 Anubis killed. However premium users will have the luxury of receiving two times the reward.

After receiving the mission, open the quest window using the shortcut keys Alt + U. Find the Midgard Crowd Control Quest then open the quest log. Starting from this point, every Anubis killed will be added to the kill count on the quest window.

Crowd Control Quest encourages party play so the best thing to do is to find a competent party. Most of the players are already aware of the shared kill count for parties so most of them are waiting near the Mercenary Scout. As for me, I used my High Priest with Turn Undead so I preferred to solo the quest.

As I have observed during the course of the quest, the dominant participants were High Priest and Priests. Most of them were solo also just like me because of the assured kill count from the instant kill of Resurrection and Turn Undead. Even if there were solo adventurers, parties during the event were also notable. Some famous parties includes a soul linked Assassin Cross, Minstel, Gypsy, Champion with a Scholar aid. Spawn camping during the event is not advisable because of the low spawn rate compared to the density of participants. Moving around would be the best option.

During the event kill stealing is not an issue because most adventurers were aiming for the fast kill count. I could compare the scenario with the old glory of Glast Heim Underprison where in all players were rabidly killing all monsters on sight. It’s like killing the monster in order for the others to survive or avoid further attacks from the monster.

Some of the lowbies and mercenary addicts were gathered near the center of Sphinx level 4 for attempts to collectively kill monsters. They thought of using the event with increased spawn to gain higher experience just like the community in Moscovia Dungeon. However if they have participated on this event they will not get kill counts from their mercenary.

After gaining 50 kill counts from the Anubis, Return to the [Quest] Mercenary Scout to redeem a Mercenary Badge and an Yggdrasil Berry. As I have mentioned earlier Premium Users will have a double reward so they will be rewarded with 2 Mercenary Badge and 2 Yggdrasil Berry. The redemption of rewards is limited only to 20 times. Beyond that the Mercenary Scout will no longer allow you to participate.

Rewards:
The rewards for this quest are the same as the previous Midgard Crowd Control Quest. After claiming all your Mercenary Badges, go back to the town and and meet the [Quest] Elite Mercenary again. He will then present you with the list of available siege headgears that could be acquired. The prizes are divided into Upper Headgears and Mid Headgears. The Upper Headgear has a common description of reducing Demi-Human attacks by 10% while the Mid Headgears has the common description of reducing Demi-human attacks by 2%.

Headgears
Exchange 10 Mercenary Badges for Siege Sakkat

Exchange 10 Mercenary Badges for Siege Big Sis Ribbon

Exchange 20 Mercenary Badges for Siege Vane Hairpin

Exchange 20 Mercenary Badges for Siege Sunday Hat

I am lucky enough to have completed all the siege headgears being giving during this event. I am hopeful to see additional fashionable headgears for the succeeding crowd controls to come if there are any.

Comments:
The Sphinx Crowd Control Quest is the third variation of Crowd Control for pRO. I’m very happy that the crowd control became a trend for us because it promotes random party for the adventurers. The quest encourages both veterans and newbies to party in order to maximize their kill count. Setting the Anubis as the target for the quest is very good because players can participate on the quest while power leveling. As you know Anubis is a very desirable target for lowbies to be able to gain fast experience. It’s also good to note that the GMs lower the required kill to 50 considering the low spawn of Anubis in the area. However non-transcendent classes except Priest had a hard time on this quest. I hope to see more of crowd control events in the future that would also give consideration to non-transcendent classes.
